Tom and Jerry living in perrrrrfect harmony?

Tomandjerry

We all grew up watching Tom and Jerry. The basic premise of the cartoon was that Cats and small furry creatures such as mice, just do not get on and can’t live together. So what's going on here? A cat and a mouse living in perfect harmony. Have we been sold a lie? Are Tom and Jerry now living in perfect harmony in their retirement in the Hollywood hills having made their millions from making us believe through constant laughter, that they could not stand the site of each other? I would like to think so!

Cute dog advertsing

Not usually a big fan of doggy advertising that pretends that the animal is hurt, but this one is hilarious and the dog is quite obviously fine. He is just a great actor!

Puppies are not suitable Christmas gifts.

Dog_and_xmas_tree

www.Dogster.com have posted an article that I felt worth re-posting. At this time of year, the temptation to go out and buy a pet as a gift for family or friends is huge. Puppies are the most obvious pet to purchase for their obvious charm and desirability, but as we all know, puppies grow up to become dogs, and if the owner did not want, or cannot cope with a lively, growing dog, then there will only be one outcome, and it won’t be a happy one for dog or owner. So don’t buy a pet as a Christmas gift this year. Animals are not products to be purchased and exchanged for money. They are animals with feelings and needs which brings a lot of responsibility for an owner who did not wat a pet in the first place. So below is the, article published by dogster, with which I whole heartedly agree.

This (Black) Friday, millions of shoppers will descend upon brick-and-mortar and Internet retailers, all in pursuit of the perfect gift at the right prices. Right or wrong, there’s no question that this is a season for consumerism at its best, characterized by lavish gifts.

This holiday season, I’d like to share with you my Christmas wish for dogs: Don’t buy your friends, family member, or significant other a dog or puppy for the holidays. A recent article from the Huffington Post summarizes the results of a recent AP poll on dog ownership. Approximately 40 percent of respondents said that at least one of their current pets was given to them as a gift.

Pets as gifts are rarely a good idea, even if you know your daughter, husband, best friend, sister, or grandmother loves dogs. Here are some of the problems with giving pets as gifts:

1. Lack of choice. Selecting the right dog for your family is part of the fun of obtaining a new dog or puppy, and choosing responsibly is a critical part of the decision. Research a wide variety of breeds to find a good match, and make sure all the household members discuss your potential pet’s temperament, size, health issues, grooming requirements, training goals, and exercise needs. You should do at least as much homework as you would to select a new car or home — after all, this animal will be in your life for at least a decade.

2. Holidays are a stressful time — for people and dogs. It’s much better to wait until things calm down in the new year, so that you have more time to dedicate to raising your puppy well, or helping your older adopted dog adjust to and thrive in your home

3. Beware the gift of investments. Imagine telling someone, “I purchased you a college education!” for Christmas, when in fact you only bought them textbooks for their first semester. It’s absurd! Just as books are not the bulk of the cost of a college education, the initial expense of a dog is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to costs associated with lifetime pet ownership.

The ASPCA estimates that it costs $1,843 to raise a large breed dog throughout its first year of life. I almost fell off my chair when I read this. Having just finished a year of raising a Saint Bernard puppy, I can tell you that our costs far exceeded this. I had to buy a bigger vehicle when I decided to become a Saint mom, so tack on multiple thousands of dollars for the cost of more gas and a van, if you want a big dog. The costs of pet ownership will vary with geographic region, quality of nutrition, and the amount of training you give to the dog.

Owning a dog over its lifetime is an expense measured in tens of thousands of dollars. Hey, Merry Christmas, right?

4. Dogs are animals and deserve to be treated with respect. Almost all pets given as gifts are obtained from unethical sources like puppy brokers, mills, and backyard breeders. How do I know this? Because truly responsible breeders (diamonds in the rough!) and good rescue or shelter organizations will not just send any dog to any home; they want to send every dog to the right home, which means screening individual dogs and adopters to ensure the best possible matches.

Pet portrait on canvas

Ava_canvas

I been busy in the studio today designing and creating pet portraits from photos. I have posted a picture of a canvas of Ava, a young Whippet puppy. The finished canvas is 16” x 16” and is based on two photos of the puppy. The colours have come up nice and brightly after receiving a coat of matte varnish. The canvas will look stunning when hung on her owners wall.

Charlie Brown, the cutest little puppy

Charlie-cute-puppy

Been busy working on some images of Charlie Brown as a puppy today. He was an extremely cute and lovable little puppy, and still is as an adult Labrador, he’s just a lot bigger and far far hairier!

This portrait of Charlie started life as three photos taken years ago which we have transformed into a vibrant, eye catching canvas ready to mount on the wall. Christmas delivery deadlines

Yahoo have today run a small, but I thought, very useful piece which I thought I would put on my blog. No one wants to miss giving a Christmas present to family and friends due to the fact that it was not delivered on time, so below is a list of deadlines for posting parcels and letters to make sure that they are delivered before Christmas. (Arctic weather depending!)

Christmas dates

Beat the Christmas rush and the elbow digs in the post office and make sure you get your Xmas parcels signed, sealed and delivered in time for Christmas day. This means:

Getting your standard parcels posted by Wednesday 14th December
Your second class and recorded signed items in by Saturday 17th December
  • Your first class recorded signed for items in by Tuesday 20th December

Avoid having a nightmare before Christmas by being organised and using the special delivery service, which offers delivery before Christmas if you post your items by:

    Thursday 22nd December, or
  • Friday 23rd December with a Saturday guarantee

    Christmas overseas

For those of you with family or friends on further shores then keep in mind that international delivery in time for Christmas has a tighter schedule! (The reindeer have to travel further, you see):

Airmail services to South & Central America, Caribbean, Africa, Middle East, Asia, Far East (including Japan), Australia and New Zealand must be made by Monday 5th December
  • Get your parcels in by Friday 9th December  for Eastern Europe, USA and Canada
  • Get your parcels in by Monday 12th December for Western Europe

So if you are ordering your pet portrait from us, please allow ten days for us to create it from placing your order and we need to post it to you by the 14th December using standard parcel post. So get your orders in prior to the 4th of December to avoid disappointment.

Larry losing game of cat and mouse

    Larry_the_cat

No 10 Downing Street has rebuffed calls for Larry the cat to be sacked, after reports that a mouse appeared in the dinning room during a recent Prime Ministerial lunch. Larry, bought in February of this year, was brought in to tackle the rising rodent problem at No 10 Downing Street. The problem became obvious to all when a large rat was seen scuttling past the door of No 10 during a live television broadcast. Larry is five years old and came from Battersea Dog and Cat home. He was described as having “a high chase-drive and hunting instinct”. He had developed these skills during his time on the street. Back in June this year, the Prime Minister was quoted as saying that Larry was “a good mouser” and has caught three mice since his arrival at No 10.

But perhaps Larry’s time on Downing Street is nearing an end as the mice and rats get ever more confident and ever more visible. Suspicions that perhaps Larry has indeed taken his eye off the job in hand were confirmed, when a spokesman from the Royal Parks openly stated that Larry had struck up a “close” friendship with a cat called Maisie who lives at the nearby St James’ Park Keepers Cottage.

So is this another scandal for the members of Downing Street to fend off, and will there be an investigation into Larry’s expenses? Is he spending our hard earned taxes on wining and dining the fabulous Maisie every evening rather than focusing on his brief to rid Downing Street of vermin? And did Larry ‘embellish’ his CV to make him look like the right candidate for the job. Does he really have a good “hunting instinct” for rodents, and perhaps his “high chase-drive” does not actually apply to mice, but his interest in the ladies!

Since receiving the backing of Downing Street, like many that have gone before him, it would seem that Larry may have to go soon before he is pushed!

Andreas Gursky's Rhein II sets photo record

    Andreas_gursky

An image of the Rhine, by German artist Andreas Gursky, has fetched a stunning £2.7m at Christies auction in New York. This is a new world record for the price paid for a photograph at auction.

Rhein II is one of an edition of six works.  The panoramic print is mounted on glass and was created in 1999. Others in the series hang in the Tate Modern and New York’s Museum of Modern Art.

It beat the previous record £2.5m achieved by an untitled 1981 colour print by Cindy Sherman, who is the subject of all her own works.Gursky's print had a pre-sale estimate of £1.6m-£2.2m.

Gursky has spoken of "a particular place with a view over the Rhine which has somehow always fascinated me, but it didn't suffice for a picture as it basically constituted only part of a picture".

He said he "carried this idea for a picture around with me for a year-and-a-half".

"In the end I decided to digitalise the pictures and leave out the elements that bothered me," he added.

Christie's said the viewer was "not invited to consider a specific place along the river, but rather an almost 'platonic' ideal of the body of water as it navigates the landscape"

    The dog whisperer down under

    Cesar_milan

Everybody's favourite dog trainer (or perhaps pet owner trainer) is going down under. Cesar Milan will undertake a tour of Australia and New Zealand giving training seminars, following his successful tour of the states and the Uk.

Cesar spoke with  Australia's Herald Sun, who reported:

Ahead of a national seminar tour, sharing his secrets to "transforming dogs and empowering their owners,'' Cesar Millan took aim at those blaming bad dogs or breeds for attacks and anti-social behaviour.

Having raised his two sons around American pit bulls, the Emmy-nominee said like powerful cars, humans need to "understand and control the power of dogs.''

"It's not the dog, it's the human. We have created breeds with certain power, such as pit bulls and we have to take responsibility for that," he said.

Widespread issues with dangerous dogs is not a "problem with aggression, but a problem with education.''

"There is a reason why it is mandatory for you to take a test to drive a car because of the danger, the power, the responsibility. It should be the same for us to understand and control the power of dogs," he said.

According to Cesar, dogs are facing problems with obesity and anxiety like never before, much like their owners. This is a result of being over indulged or spoilt by their owners. "They go buy a toy, or some treat to cover up their guilt because they didn't take the dog for a walk, which it needs,'' he said.

Dog Photographer of the Year 2011 Competition Winner revealed

    Dpoty11winner

Capturing the sight of her Whippet basking in the morning sun has led Welsh amateur photographer Tina Williams to victory in the Kennel Club’s Dog Photographer of the Year Competition 2011. Judges including Dame Jenni Murray and photographer Martin Usborne spent hours deliberating over the thousands of images that were entered into the competition, the most successful to date.

Raising almost £2,500 for the Kennel Club Charitable Trust, the competition attracted entrants from all over the world and standards were high. Despite tough competition, the winning image of Whippet, Joey, with its unique and elegant charm was decided as the winner of both the Portrait category and the overall competition.

The photographer, Tina from Holyhead, Wales said: “It is a brilliant feeling to be awarded Dog Photographer of the Year. I am looking forward to seeing the other images as I know competition was tough. All dogs are beautiful to me, which is why I love taking pictures of my dogs. Joey is obviously a brilliant model!”

The Dog Photographer of the Year Competition consists of five categories: Portrait, Man’s Best Friend, Dogs At Play, Dogs At Work and I Love Dogs Because – a category specifically for those aged 16 and under.

We feel that the photo of the Joey the Whippet is without doubt an extremely beautiful image. The light in the photo is soft, bringing out the light and shadow in the dogs fur. The warmth, not only in the colours of the image, but also in the eyes of the Whippet, is totally stunning.

Here at Pets in Portraits, we would be extremely proud to have taken a photo as beautiful as the winning entry. We also love to receive your photos of your pets so that we can transform them into beautiful pet portraits from photos, mounted on canvas, or a framed mount and delivered to your door.

Pet Photography Tips : Pet Photography Locations

Expert village have posted a series of 15, very helpful videos on pet photography tips on youtube. Below is an interesting one on choosing a location for your pet photo shoot.

The most important aspects covered here are light and being in a place where your pet can relax and feel comfortable so that you can get the shots you want. Shooting in natural light is preferential, unless you have access to a photographic studio where you can control the lighting. If you are shooting outdoors, try to choose an area out of bright, direct sun light. Shooting in bright light generally tends to wash out colours and leave images over exposed. So try to take your shots on a bright, but slightly overcast day in a location where your pet feels comfortable and you are well on the way to some great shots.

Once you have taken your shots, why not email them to us and we will transform you photo into a beautiful pet portrait mounted on canvas. Why not visit our gallery and choose your style of pet portrait at www.petsinportraits.co.uk
